Bluebirds Of A Feather
By Georgann Schmalz
Born to normally pigmented Eastern Bluebird parents, three partial (imperfect) albino fledglings come for their meal worm breakfast. All three birds hatched from the same clutch in a bluebird box in DeKalb County, Georgia in early July 2002. Each bird has a slight tinge of blue on its flight feathers and tail, black eyes, but white contour feathers of the head and body.
The owners of the property, Chris and Beth Jordan, have been feeding the adults and youngsters meal worms. The birds come to the food when Chris alerts them by tapping on the plastic tray for their breakfast. When not eating meal worms, the adults and young birds feed in the grass and shrubs together.
These photos were taken by Chris Jordan (right photo) and me when the young birds were about seven weeks old.
